The Passing of PER Harry Brockwell

Gone but not forgotten ER Harry Brockwell, Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477We are saddened to announce the passing of PER Harry Brockwell on December 26, 2015. Harry was a 35-year member of the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge No. 2477 and served as Exalted Ruler in 2010. Harry leaves behind his wife, Madeleine of 54 years along with their two children, Scott and Yvonne, their families and many friends.
Harry had been elected Exalted Ruler in 1987 but due to demands that required leaving California, he continued his support of the lodge from a distance. When he returned to the area Harry desired to complete his obligation in the role of Fidelity, and when the opportunity presented itself in 2010, he stepped in and took the reins.
Among his accomplishments, Harry was also inducted into the Culinary Hall of Fame in January of 2015. A corporate consulting chef whose career spanned more than 40 years he was also awarded the Antonin Careme Medal by the ACF San Francisco Chapter in 2007.
Bringing his culinary talents to the lodge during his year as ER, 2477 also beheld some of the best dinners and culinary education experienced by the lodge membership. Having a friend who just happened to be the then Playboy Executive Chef William Carter at the lodge is one example of the fine dining experienced by some of the members (see photo below).
Harry was always looking for ways to help others, and inquiring into their health and happiness exemplifying the creed of goodwill within the Elks.
We will remember Harry for his service and consideration for others, gone but not forgotten the 11 O’clock Toast will always bring memories of our absent brother.

To you Harry, thank you for your mentoring and friendship, here’s a cup raised with my personal favorite 11 O’Clock Toast:

Be still and listen one and all, cease your gaiety and mirth.
Eleven strokes are tolling to Elks throughout the earth
Their music softly pealing their message far and near
Like the throbbing heart of Elkdom they speak justice and good cheer.
For an Elk is never forgotten wherever they may roam
What’er their lot in life may be Eleven brings them home.
The sunshine finds them busy the evening holds no time
But the eleventh hour is sacred for the sake of Auld Lang Syne.
And for those whose race is ended their course run true and well.
Those eleven strokes are chanting sweet memories saddened knell.
So cease your mirth and laughter it is the hour so dear yet dread
When we toast our absent members the living and the dead.
